AMBON, LAE & PORT MORESBY WAR MEMORIALS (No Known Grave)
All soldiers, sailors, nurses and airmen who have 'no known grave' have a special place in my heart, but in the case of the Ambon Memorial, the names contained thereon have a very special place in my heart because there are eyewitness reports in the Dutch National Archives that the Japanese put captured Australian soldiers into bamboo cages used for transporting pigs. After using them to frighten local villagers, the Japanese threw the Australians, still confined in the bamboo cages, into the ocean to feed the sharks.
The Australians were heard cursing the Japanese to the end.
